Klinsmann sets preliminary U.S. roster for Copa America

August 2024 · 3 minute read

Jurgen Klinsmann’s 40-man preliminary roster ahead of Copa America includes the usual collection of World Cup veterans and a group of prospects, including 17-year-old attacker Christian Pulisic and MLS rookie Jordan Morris.

Klinsmann must trim the list to 23 by May 20. Copa America begins June 3 with the United States facing Colombia at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif. The other group matches are against Costa Rica on June 7 at Soldier Field in Chicago and Paraguay on June 11 at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.

U.S. training camp will open in Miami on May 16 with European- and Mexican-based players. The MLS delegation will not arrive until after the May 20-22 league matches. Some players involved in the Liga MX playoffs might also report late.

Because the MLSers are arriving later, Klinsmann is planning to invite non-Copa eligible players to join the early-reporting group and fill out the game-day roster for the May 22 friendly at Puerto Rico. Those temporary call-ups would include players from European and Mexican clubs.

The final Copa squad will be in place for tuneups against Ecuador on May 25 at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Tex., and Bolivia on May 28 at Children’s Mercy Park in Kansas City, Kan.

The final 23 must come from the preliminary 40-man list. Injury replacements are allowed up to 24 hours before the Copa opener and must also come from the 40.

Not everyone on the preliminary list will report to training camp. The prelim roster provides only a pool of players from which Klinsmann will pick a squad.
